Church Volunteer Opportunities

ACOLYTES: Youth in fifth grade or older and training is provided. Light and extinguish the candles as well as offer assistance to the Pastor during the worship service. They may also double as communion assistants. Requirements: Anyone demonstrating the physical ability to walk, stand, and use a candle lighter.


ALTAR GUILD: Responsible for setting the altar for communion, changing the paraments, and maintaining worship supplies and linens.


AUDIO-VIDEO TEAM: Run the computer and sound board located in the balcony.  Requirements:  Anyone with the physical ability to climb the steps into the balcony and having a very basic level of skill or comfort with modern technology. 


BINGO VOLUNTEERS: 1st Monday of each month at various senior facilities in the area. Contact Shirley Davis at 610-678-7717.


BULLETIN HELPERS: We need people to help put bulletins together on Friday mornings. It only takes about an hour. Please sign up on the Volunteer Bulletin Board or call the church office.


COMMUNION ASSISTANTS: Help with the distribution of communion by offering wine or grape juice to communicants.  Requirements:  Baptized and confirmed Christians demonstrating the physical ability to walk while holding a tray of filled communion cups in one hand. 


COOKS NEEDED: St. John’s has a Meal Ministry in that we provide a meal for a new mother or someone recovering from surgery or a serious illness. We need a few more people to make meals. These are meals that you make in your own home and take to the person receiving them. Examples are: casserole, soup, chili, etc. You are only called to provide a meal when needed. Please sign up on the volunteer bulletin board.


FRIENDLY VISITORS NEEDED: Stay in touch with one of our homebound members with a phone call, card or visit.


GREETERS: We need help at both services.  Greeters welcome people with a warm and friendly smile, hand out bulletins, and offer assistance to visitors.  Requirements:  Anyone who is friendly, warm and with the physical ability to walk and stand.


HELPING HANDS: Volunteers who offer assistance to anyone needing help in and out of the car before and after worship.  Requirements:  Anyone who cares about those with physical limitations and demonstrates the physical ability to help someone in and out of a car.


LAY READERS: Read the appointed passages from the Bible for the congregation to hear the Word of God in worship.  Requirements:  Anyone who can read publicly.


USHERS: We need help at both services.  Ushers welcome people with a warm and friendly smile, hand out bulletins, and offer assistance to visitors.  They gather the offering, and collect empty communion cups.  Requirements:  Anyone who is friendly, warm and with the physical ability to walk and stand.



Community Volunteer Opportunities

SOUP KITCHEN : we serve on the third Friday of each month (except July & August) at New Journey Methodist Church in Reading. We do not prepare the food and carpooling is available.

Donations Requested

YARN NEEDED: We are in need of yarn for those making Prayer Shawls. If you have full skeins of yarn that you would like to donate, please drop it off in the church office.
